Koodalloor Gurukula Tradition

Education in ancient India was more identified with the 'Gurukula' system. 'Koodallur Gurukula' was considered to be the most ancient education system of Indian knowledge such as Sanskrit, Shasthras, Vedas, Tarka, Ayurveda & Yoga, Darshanas, Poorva & Uthara Meemamsa and such.

Sri Cherukulappuram Krishnan Namboodiri was blessed with a keen intellect. He went to the Koodalloor Gurukula and immersed himself into the Sasthras. After completing the studies he started practicing Ayurveda & Toxicology and simultaneously teaching students at Poomully Mana. Poomully Neelakandan Namboodirippad popularly known as 'Poomully Aramthampuran' and Valloor Sankaran Namboodiri popularly known as 'Valloor', were his main disciples.

Late Poomully Aramthampuran

(1921 – 1997)

Late Poomully Neelakandan Nampoothirippad popularly known as Aram Thampuran was born in 1921. He was a living legend and was an expert in all walks of life. His primary education was in the traditional manner and the Veda Lessons were completed under the tutelage of his father, followed by school and college education. Later under the guidance of Shri Cherukulapuram Krishnan Namboodiri, (from the illustrious Koodalloor Gurukulam system, Shri Namboodiripad underwent rigorous training in Kavyam, Tarkam, Meemamsa, Vedanta, Ayurveda & Toxicology. His deep knowledge in Meemamsa has been acknowledged by the Jagad Guru Sree Sankaracharya of Sringeri. He is unmatched in his knowledge of ayurveda. His selfless and untiring efforts in the treatment and promotions of ayurveda have been widely acclaimed. This can be amply seen his work at the Keraleeya Ayurveda Samajam, Shoranur, where under his chairmanship a research facility for the treatment of diabetes and infertility has been successfully established. The credit for the successful Kudipravesika treatment of the last century also goes to Poomully Aramthampuran and Vaidyamadhom Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri. Aramthampuran acquired a lot of followers and disciples.

Late Brahmasree Valloor Sankaran Namboodiri

(1917 – 2015 )

Valloor Sankaran Namboodiri popularly known as Valloor was born in 1917 into a very affluent Namboodiri family known as Valloor Mana. He completed his elementary education on the Vedas, Sanskrit, Tarka, Nyaya and Vyakarana under the prominent masters of that time. Later on Valloor approached Sri Cherukulappuram Krishnan Namboodiri and started learning ayurveda. He learned Ashtangahrudaya, Charaka Samhitha, Balachikitsa and Visha vaidya (Toxicology) under Cherukulappuram. Valloor has also trained in the special types of ayurvedic treatments like 'Elakki Chikitsa' – treatments for rabies patients. After completing his education Valloor started practicing ayurveda for the wellness of mankind. Valloor has successfully treated hundreds of snake bite cases. He has many disciples and teaches in the traditional Gurukula manner known as the Mukhamukha style or 'face to face' education.

Smt.Dr.Aparna Poomully Mana

Dr. Saraswathy M, popularly known as 'Dr. Aparna Poomully Mana' was born in Mallissery Mana in Palakkad district. Along with her modern school education she had undergone gurukula training under Valloor Sankaran Namboodiri from the age of seven. For a period of more than a decade, she trained rigorously under Valloor in Sankrit, Vyakarana, Ashtangahrudayam, Charaka samhitha, Visha chikitsa(Toxicology), Bala chikitsa etc. and following her gurukula education, she completed her formal medicine course in Ayurveda. Thereafter she married the grandson of Aramthampuran and became an integral part of the Poomully Mana. Dr. Aparna Poomully Mana is associated with 'Poomully Mana Heritage Ayurveda Centre' as the Chief Resident Physician. Along with her attempt to preserve the ancient ayurvedic texts of Poomully Mana, she is conducting research on various unique ayurvedic formulations and keeping alive the glorious spirit of Poomully Aramthampuran.

Smt.Dr.Arathi Poomully Mana

Dr. Arathi Poomully Mana was born into the famous Munnoolam Mana (the family of Guruvayoor temple priests). After completing her graduation in Ayurveda she was married to the grandson of Aramthampuran and joined the royal lineage of Poomully Mana. Dr. Arathi is associated with 'Poomully Mana Heritage Ayurveda Centre' as the Additional Resident Doctor. Along with her practice she is undergoing rigorous training on ayurveda and related sciences in the most traditional manner under Dr. Devan Namboodiri & Dr. Aparna Poomully Mana.

Dr. Naripparambu Devan Namboodiri

Dr. Devan Namboodiri was born in Naripparambu Mana in 1961. After completing his formal education in ayurveda at the Ayurveda College in Coimbatore, he studied Vyakarana & Yoga from prominent masters. Thereafter he continued his studies under Poomully Aramthampuran on various curriculums such as Ayurveda, Balacikithsa, Hastyayurveda, Nyayashastra, Poorvameemamsa, & Uttharameemamsa for a period of more than ten years. Dr. Devan Namboodiri is one of the Chief Consulting Doctors at Punnathoor Kotta, the elephant sanctuary of the Guruvayoor Dewaswom. With over three decades of experience in ayurvedic treatments, he is providing his services to 'Poomully Mana Heritage Ayurveda Centre' as the Chief Consulting Physician. Besides, his services and guidance are an inspiration to the younger generation of Poomully Mana.
